 Frequently Asked Questions

  • The handpan is a metal musical instrument made out of two connected shells, which you play with your hands or rather, with your fingers. The instrument has several note fields. Together they form a scale, for example minor or major. Each tone sounds beautiful on its own, but the different tones resonate together beautifully, creating a unique, mesmerizing sound.

    • Handpan: This instrument produces a warm, melodic, and rich sound, and is played with the fingers. It has a distinctive sound quality, different from that of a steel drum, which tends to be brighter and more percussive. Handpans evolved from the Hang®, an instrument created by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer of PANArt. When PANArt's patent expired, other manufacturers began making similar instruments, leading to the broader category known as handpans.

    • Hang®: Often mistakenly referred to as the Hang Drum, the Hang® is the original instrument made by PANArt, which inspired the handpan category. "Hang Drum" is a misnomer that combines "Hang" with "drum," though the instrument is specifically called Hang®.

    • Steel Drum: This instrument, typically played with mallets, is known for its bright and metallic sound. It differs from the handpan in both construction and playing technique, as the latter is played with the hands.

    • Tongue Drums (Tank Drum, Steel Tongue Drum): These drums feature cut-out tongues that produce sound when struck. They are more affordable alternatives to handpans and can be played with hands or mallets. While they may look similar to handpans, they offer different tonal qualities and playing options.

    • Hand Drum: This term generally refers to any drum played with the hands, such as bongos, congas, or djembes. It is distinct from the handpan and related instruments.

    • Spacedrum®: This is a specific brand of handpan, which offers its unique variation on the instrument's design and sound.

  • It usually takes 3 lessons to learn the Basics behind playing the handpan and you can actually start playing and improvising by yourself around the 3rd lesson. Usually on the fifth we get into learning songs, melodies and patterns to expand your play and explore your way through.

"It's just easy and feels natural" is what I often hear from my students and first-timers. While learning a new instrument can be a bit challenging at first, the handpan is surprisingly easier and quicker to pick up compared to instruments like the guitar, piano, violin, flute, and others. It's an amazing choice if you're starting your musical journey from scratch. It's all about taking that first step and exploring the limits of your mind.

  • You don't have to own a handpan to dive into this experience. Typically, I include a handpan in each lesson, and if you want, there's an option to keep it or rent it. We've got some fantastic deals that make it more accessible. But remember, the lessons aren't just about playing the handpan; they're also about understanding how your mind and body work. So, even if you're still deciding on a handpan, you can still enjoy the lessons.

  • In my lessons, it's not just about learning to play the handpan. It's about bringing your focus into the music, into the moment and into the present. I want to show you how to play while being fully present with yourself and your surroundings. We'll cover the basics, like breathing while playing and staying focused, and exploring your way around the handpan. Once you've got the hang of that, we'll dive into improvisation using your intuition. I'll also guide you on how to get into a state of musical flow where time and space dissolve, so you can really enjoy every moment when you're playing. It's not just about the handpan; it's about discovering yourself through the handpan.
